Yussef Dayes is an English jazz drummer, composer, and record producer born on December 12, 1992, in South East London. Recognized as one of the most exciting and innovative young talents in the UK jazz scene, Dayes has made a significant impact with his expressive and intense drumming style.

Dayes began his musical exploration at a very young age. With a bass-playing father who performed in New York during the 1970s, Dayes was exposed to a diverse range of musical influences early on. His father gifted him his first drum kit at age four, setting the foundation for his future career. His musical sensibilities were further shaped by his father's extensive jazz vinyl collection, his mother's love for country music and 1960s pop, and the jungle productions of his elder brother Ahmad.
At the age of ten, Dayes had the privilege of studying under fusion icon Billy Cobham, who had played drums for Miles Davis. This experience solidified his commitment to a professional music career.

Dayes' career officially began with the formation of the band United Vibrations, alongside his brothers Ahmad (trombone) and Kareem (bass) as well as their friend Wayne Francis II (saxophone). The band expertly blended Afrobeat with jazz and rock elements, releasing their debut album "Galaxies Not Ghettos" in 2011.
In 2016, Dayes rose to prominence as one half of the jazz-funk duo Yussef Kamaal with keyboardist Kamaal Williams. Their critically acclaimed album "Black Focus" won accolades and charted at number 26 on the Official Charts Company's Jazz & Blues chart, also winning the Best Breakthrough Act award at the 2017 Jazz FM Awards.

Embarking on a solo career after Yussef Kamaal, Dayes released his first single, "Love Is the Message," in 2018. He later collaborated with guitarist Tom Misch on the album "What Kinda Music" in 2020, which reached number 4 on the UK Albums Chart.
On September 8, 2023, Dayes debuted his solo album "Black Classical Music," which pays homage to pioneering Black musicians who challenged limiting genre labels. The album showcases his diverse influences, blending Afro-Cuban, reggae, Afrobeat, hip-hop, and jazz music.

Dayes is renowned for his expressive, technical drumming style, and for channeling spiritual energy through rhythm. His performances are known for their intensity, with Dayes often taking center stage—a rare feat for a drummer. His solo album, "Black Classical Music," not only won critical acclaim but also won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Album in 2024, alongside being nominated for Best New Artist at the Brit Awards.
Dayes frequently collaborates with a range of artists, with his album featuring Masego, Jahaan Sweet, Jamilah Barry, and Chronixx. His live band typically includes Malik Venna on saxophone, Elijah Fox on keys, and Rocco Palladino on bass.

Yussef Dayes remains a vital figure in contemporary jazz, continually pushing the boundaries of the genre. His musical journey and work fuse traditional jazz elements with contemporary sounds, mirroring the rich and varied musical landscape of London and the broader Black musical diaspora.
