
Kokoroko is a vibrant eight-piece Afrobeat and jazz band based in London, established in 2014. The band's name, which means "be strong" in Urhobo—a language from Nigeria—reflects their powerful and dynamic sound. The band brings a unique fusion of Afrobeat rhythms with contemporary jazz influences, made even more captivating by their energetic live performances.

The ensemble is led by key figures like Sheila Maurice-Grey, who serves as a co-bandleader, playing the trumpet, flugelhorn, and providing vocals. Alongside her, co-bandleader Onome Edgeworth leads the percussion section. The band features Anoushka Nanguy on trombone and vocals, Tobi Adenaike on guitar and vocals, Yohan Kebede on keyboards, synthesizers, and vocals, Duane Atherley on bass and vocals, and Ayo Salawu on drums and vocals. This diverse line-up enhances their rich, layered sound that captivates audiences across the globe.

Kokoroko’s music is a compelling blend of Afrobeat, highlife, soul, funk, and jazz. Their sound is heavily influenced by West African music legends such as Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, and Ebo Taylor. The band integrates elements of London's music scene with African American blues, underpinned by a strong emphasis on improvisation and jazz roots. Kokoroko came into the spotlight in 2018 and quickly released their self-titled debut EP in 2019. Their track "Abusey Junction" was notably featured on Brownswood Recordings' "We Out Here" compilation, amassing over 20 million views on YouTube. They have performed at iconic platforms such as Glastonbury, Boiler Room, Meltdown at the Southbank Centre, and the BBC Proms. In 2022, they released their much-anticipated debut album, "Could We Be More," followed by the "Get The Message" EP in November 2024.

Kokoroko has embarked on sold-out tours across Brazil, India, and the UK. They have received various nominations and awards, cementing their role as integral contributors to London's thriving jazz scene. Their mission extends beyond just performance; they strive to elevate the representation of younger musicians from the Afro-Caribbean diaspora playing Afrobeat, all while honing a distinct and recognizable sound.
