The genesis of Hiatus Kaiyote began when Paul Bender attended a solo show of Nai Palm in 2010 and was mesmerized by her singular musical presence. This led to their collaboration, which eventually expanded to include Simon Mavin and Perrin Moss to form the complete band in 2011.

The band's innovative sound has garnered endorsements from legends like Erykah Badu, Questlove, and Prince, and their music has been sampled by icons including Beyoncé, Drake, and Kendrick Lamar. Their creative process often starts with ideas from Nai Palm, which are collectively developed into the complex and textured music they're known for.

In 2018, Nai Palm faced a personal challenge when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, resulting in a temporary hiatus for the band. During this period, the other members explored side projects, and Palm announced being cancer-free in 2019. Despite these setbacks, Hiatus Kaiyote has been renowned for their exceptional live performances, which involve seamlessly blending their songs into continuous, multilayered sets, challenging the band to replicate their nuanced studio sound on stage.
Hiatus Kaiyote has made an indelible mark on the international music charts, achieving top 10 status in Australia and appearing on charts in Germany, the UK, and the US. Their distinctive sound continues to attract dedicated fans and critical acclaim within the contemporary soul and R&B landscapes.
