Galactic

Galactic is a renowned American funk and jazz band hailing from the vibrant city of New Orleans, Louisiana. Their journey began in 1994 when childhood friends Jeff Raines and Robert Mercurio relocated from Chevy Chase, Maryland, driven by their passion to delve into the lively music scene of New Orleans. The band's eclectic sound is a rich tapestry woven with elements of funk, jazz, rock, and electronic music.

Origins and Formation

Founded in 1994, Galactic was originally an octet named Galactic Prophylactic, inspired by an Eddie Murphy skit from Saturday Night Live. However, the band evolved into a sextet, comprising Jeff Raines (guitar), Robert Mercurio (bass), Stanton Moore (drums), Rich Vogel (organ), Theryl DeClouet (vocals), and Ben Ellman (saxophone). Raines and Mercurio were particularly drawn to the thriving funk scene in New Orleans, deeply influenced by local legends such as The Meters and Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
