Founded in 1994, Galactic was originally an octet named Galactic Prophylactic, inspired by an Eddie Murphy skit from Saturday Night Live. However, the band evolved into a sextet, comprising Jeff Raines (guitar), Robert Mercurio (bass), Stanton Moore (drums), Rich Vogel (organ), Theryl DeClouet (vocals), and Ben Ellman (saxophone). Raines and Mercurio were particularly drawn to the thriving funk scene in New Orleans, deeply influenced by local legends such as The Meters and Dirty Dozen Brass Band.

The band's early sound was described as "swamp funk," significantly influenced by New Orleans artists such as Dr. John, Chocolate Milk, and The Meters. They have collaborated with a plethora of guest vocalists and artists, including Macy Gray, Mavis Staples, and Juvenile. Their acclaimed album "Ya-Ka-May" featured collaborations with various New Orleans musicians. In 2018, Galactic made a notable mark by purchasing the iconic New Orleans music venue Tipitina's.
