Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, this venue has played an instrumental role in nurturing and showcasing jazz talent from across the globe.
Bimhuis was founded in 1974 by Dutch jazz luminaries Hans Dulfer, Willem Breuker, and Misha Mengelberg. Established in a former furniture store on Oudeschans, it was conceived as a hub dedicated to Dutch jazz. With a DIY ethos, its original venue was defined by bare concrete walls and an impromptu stage, capturing a gritty, authentic jazz atmosphere.

Bimhuis has a vast musical repertoire, focusing on jazz, improvised music, and world music. This legendary venue is known for hosting both established international musicians and providing a significant platform for emerging talents. The venue embraces a variety of jazz styles, spanning from bebop to avant-garde and more experimental forms.

Since moving to its current location at Piet Heinkade in 2005, part of the Muziekgebouw complex, Bimhuis features a state-of-the-art concert hall with amphitheater-style seating accommodating over 200 people. The venue also boasts a restaurant, a late-night bar, and a sun terrace, offering a comprehensive experience for both artists and audience members alike.

Bimhuis is considered one of Europe's foremost jazz venues, playing a pivotal role in shaping the Dutch and European jazz landscapes. It has hosted numerous legendary jazz artists, such as Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, and Sun Ra, solidifying its reputation as an essential stop for jazz musicians worldwide.
Beyond music performances, Bimhuis engages the community through innovative events like living room concerts across Amsterdam, maintaining robust connections with both local and international jazz communities. Regular programming includes diverse showcases, international stars, emerging talents, and avant-garde projects, along with weekly jam sessions every Tuesday night.

Currently, the artistic direction of Bimhuis is steered by Frank van Berkel as of 2024. Prior to this, Huub van Riel was at the helm for 40 years, profoundly influencing and shaping the venue’s identity and its role in the global jazz circuit.
