Born in 1950 in Poughkeepsie, New York, Baratta grew up in a musically inclined family. Baratta earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Wagner College in 1973. With guidance from notable drummers like Jack DeJohnette, Bob Moses, and Steve Haas, he moved to New York City in 1975, determined to pursue a career in music.
