Born Candace Mycale Guyton on June 17, 1983, in Arlington, Texas, Mickey was immersed in diverse musical styles from a young age, including country, gospel, and R&B. She honed her vocal skills in her church choir, drawing inspiration from Whitney Houston and Dolly Parton. After high school, Mickey moved to Los Angeles to attend Santa Monica College and pursued her dream career by moving to Nashville in 2011.
Mickey's big break came when she signed with Capitol Records Nashville in 2011. Her debut EP, "Unbreakable," released in 2014, was followed by the single "Better Than You Left Me" in 2015, which climbed to #34 on the US Country Airplay chart. Her rise in the country music scene was solidified with a nomination for New Female Vocalist of the Year at the 2016 ACM Awards.
Mickey gained widespread acclaim with the 2020 release of "Black Like Me," a powerful reflection on her experience as a Black woman in country music. In 2021, she broke new ground as the first Black woman nominated for Best Country Solo Performance at the Grammy Awards and co-hosted the Academy of Country Music Awards. Her rendition of the National Anthem at Super Bowl LVI in 2022 further showcased her vocal prowess. That year, she achieved her first #1 hit on the Canada Country chart with "Boys," a collaboration with Dean Brody.
