Karl Denson's Tiny Universe (KDTU) is a dynamic funk/jazz fusion band driven by the multifaceted talents of saxophonist, flutist, and vocalist Karl Denson. Renowned for its high-energy live shows and genre-blending sound, KDTU has carved out a unique niche in the world of jam bands.
Born in 1956, Karl Denson hails from Santa Ana, California, and spent his formative years in Orange County. He first picked up the saxophone in the 7th grade, a decision sparked when his older brother gave up the instrument. Denson’s early influences in music were deeply rooted in the rich sounds of Motown, soul, funk, and jazz.
In the late 1970s, Denson embarked on his musical journey by joining the backing band for R&B singer O'Bryan. This was followed by his collaboration with Lenny Kravitz in 1988, which saw him contribute to Kravitz's first two albums, "Let Love Rule" and "Mama Said," and accompany him on tours through 1993.
KDTU was formed in 1998 during a hiatus of Denson’s previous band, The Greyboy Allstars. The band was founded on principles of "musical curiosity," seamlessly blending funk, jazz, soul, rock, and more. Denson describes their music as a form of "dance music" characterized by its soulfulness and ability to get audiences moving. Known for their spirited performances, the band channels energy into extended improvisational jams that captivate audiences.
