Born in Mozambique, Dludlu’s musical journey began at the age of 13 when he picked up a homemade guitar and taught himself to play by imitating jazz and African music he heard on the radio. Dludlu’s career took off in the mid-1980s when he collaborated with various southern African bands, including Impandze from Swaziland, Kalahari and Satari from Botswana, and Anansi, which featured Ghanaian saxophonist George Lee. A significant milestone during this period was his performance with Anansi at the Botswana Independence celebrations in 1986, alongside African stars like Thomas Mapfumo.

In the early 1990s, Dludlu moved to Johannesburg, where he worked as a session musician with notable artists such as McCoy Mrubata and his band Brotherhood, which won the Gilbey's Music of Africa Competition in 1991. He also participated in the Market Theatre production Conversations alongside Canadian trumpeter Bruce Cassidy and South African saxophonist Barney Rachabane.

Dludlu’s distinctive style began to emerge in the mid-1990s, influenced by jazz legends like Wes Montgomery, George Benson, and Pat Metheny, as well as South African icons such as Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, and Allen Kwela. His music also draws from the sounds of West and Central Africa, as well as Latin America, though he maintains that jazz remains his first love.

In 1994, Dludlu enrolled in the Jazz Programme at the University of Cape Town’s College of Music, where he focused on developing his original compositions. His high-profile performances during this period, including appearances at the Arts Alive and Guinness Jazz festivals, caught the attention of the South African record industry.

Albums and Achievements

Dludlu’s debut album, Echoes from the Past, was released in September 1997 under PolyGram and received widespread acclaim. The album earned him two FNB SAMA Awards in 1998 for "Best Newcomer" and "Best Contemporary Jazz Album," and it sold over 25,000 copies by January 1999. The album was later released internationally on the Verve label, reaching audiences in the United States, Italy, Switzerland, Sweden, and Hungary.

Dludlu’s contributions to the South African music industry have been widely recognized. In 2022, he was awarded the Career Award at the South African Music Awards (SAMA) for his decades-long impact on the industry.
