Bimhuis opened its doors on October 1, 1974, in a repurposed furniture store on Oudeschans in central Amsterdam, with stripped-down walls and a temporary stage. The name "Bimhuis" derives from "BIM," an acronym for "Beroepsvereniging voor Improviserende Musici" (Professional Union of Improvising Musicians), reflecting its roots in a grassroots movement by Dutch jazz pioneers.
