Winther, born into a musically gifted family in Copenhagen, has been recognized for his dynamic performances and contributions to jazz music.

A Journey Through Music

Carl Winther was born on October 8, 1984, and was inspired by his family's musical legacy. His father, Jens Winther, was a well-known jazz musician, while his mother, Karen Mortensen, is a drummer, and his sister, Malene Mortensen, is a singer. Winther began studying piano at seven, and his education spanned classical and jazz influences. He honed his skills further at the Rhythmic Conservatory in Copenhagen, meeting bassist Joel Illerhag, and fostering partnerships that would lead to forming his successful trio.

Formation and Style

The Carl Winther Trio came together with Winther on piano, Illerhag on bass, and Anders Mogensen on drums. They gained acclaim touring Europe and the USA, debuting with the album "Red Alert" in 2010. Winther's playing is distinguished by a virtuosic touch and storytelling through music, merging complex rhythms, playful improvisations, and diverse influences, including McCoy Tyner and Keith Jarrett. This trio's performances are notable for their unpredictability and range from jazz and funk to more Nordic influences.

Collaborations and Achievements

Throughout his career, Carl Winther has collaborated with esteemed musicians such as Billy Hart, Jerry Bergonzi, and Bill Evans. Winther's accolades include winning the 32nd Getxo Jazz Competition in Spain and DPA's 1st Prize for Best Young Jazz Composer in Denmark in 2011.
